Chapter 8

Ebony had been dialing Tabitha’s phone nonstop ever since she left her house the night prior and there still was no answer. ‘What the hell was she thinking not calling me to let me know she got home?’ Ebony thought. ‘She got me worried sick.’

Ebony walked over to the marble and chrome bar in her home that displayed all of the latest most exquisite liquors. Since she was missing her best friend, she settled on having Tabitha’s favorite concoction of Hennessey, and Kool-Aide. After over pouring more than a half of a cup of Henney, she sashayed over to the refrigerator and grabbed a cold pitcher of red Kool-Aide to add to the contents of her glass. Ebony took a large gulp and could feel the mixture already traveling through her insides. She really only drank alcohol under two circumstances, either socially or when she was stressed. And considering Ebony was alone the first reason was no longer an option. But the nervousness plaguing her body at the moment definitely gave her the urge to sip.

Not knowing what to do next, she decided on relaxing in her newly decorated living room on her recently delivered black suede couch. The softness of the material felt quite cozy as Ebony snuggled up and reached for the latest issue of her yearly subscription to Sister 2 Sister magazine. As much as she tried, Ebony was not able to concentrate on none of the gossiping stories in the magazine that usually held her attention. Her mind reluctantly kept thinking about Tabitha. She grabbed her mobile device from out of the deep pockets of her Snuggy and stared at it as if she was waiting for something to happen miraculously. She started to feel woozy but continued to drink the entire glass nonetheless. “Damn, something just ain’t right and most definitely is wrong,” Ebony voiced out loud. She and Tabitha made it a ritual to always call one another whenever they parted ways. It was something they had been doing for years, ten years of their friendship to be exact. This was the first time Tabitha had never contacted her as expected, and it made Ebony feel rather uneasy.

Suddenly, the strong vibration of her LG phone alerted her thoughts and semi-drunken state. Ebony frowned at the screen when she realized it was her boss. “Why is this man calling me on my day off?” she complained out loud before answering the phone and changing her tone to a fake pleasant voice.

“Hello, Mr. Conrad,” she greeted the boss whose job she desperately wanted. “Umm, you do know that today is my day off, don’t cha?

“Ayyy, Ms. Martin, good morning. I was hoping you answered my call, you know, after seeing it was me,” he teased but was rather serious. Most of his employees would never pick up, especially on their day off.

“Oh, Mr. Conrad, you know I am much too professional for that. I’ll never ignore a call from you mostly because if you’re contacting me on my day off, I am imagining that it must be important.
